As we approach our centenary year at Belmont House School, we wanted to look back, and reconnect with former pupils, near and far.
Here we have seven thoughtful questions that we ask our alumni focusing on their lives, successes, and the school’s influence.
Name: Jonathan R M Doak
Time period as a pupil at Belmont House: 1988 – 2001
Current Occupation: Teacher, I am currently the Head of Science, Co-ordinator of Activities & Calendar, Teacher of Games and Form 8 Tutor at Craigclowan School & Nursery
How did your time at Belmont House School shape your career path?
My time at Belmont House School provided a solid foundation for my career in education. The inspiring teaching I experienced, particularly from Mrs. Wishart in Biology, sparked my passion for science and teaching. I left Belmont and went to Strathclyde University studied Immunology and Microbiology BSc Hons. I then went to the University of Hull to gain my PGCE. Being surrounded by dedicated educators who valued learning whilst at Belmont, fostered my desire to pursue a career in teaching, where I could inspire and support students as I had been.
Can you share a key moment or memory from your time at Belmont that had a lasting impact on you?
One key moment was when I was completing my CSYS Project in Biology where I had the chance to conduct my own research. I was investigating how effective everyday cleaning materials were in killing common bacteria on common surfaces e.g. desks, hand rails, cutlery etc. The enthusiasm and encouragement from Mrs. Wishart motivated me to dive deep into the subject, igniting my desire to pursue Science further at university. The sense of accomplishment I felt after presenting my findings solidified my passion for scientific enquiry and education in general.
What skills or lessons learned at Belmont have been most valuable in your professional life?
Some of the most valuable skills I acquired were critical thinking, teamwork, and effective communication. The emphasis on collaborative projects and engaging discussions in class helped me to develop the ability to convey complex ideas clearly. These skills are essential in my current role as Head of Science and a Form Tutor, where I guide students through their academic challenges.
In what ways did Belmont House School’s community or culture contribute to your personal growth?
Looking back, I spent thirteen very happy years at Belmont. The inclusive and nurturing culture at Belmont fostered a sense of belonging and confidence. The strong relationships I built with both peers and teachers encouraged me to take risks and express myself. This supportive environment nurtured my leadership skills and instilled a belief in the importance of community, values I still carry to this day in my professional life.
Can you describe how Belmont’s teachers or extracurricular activities helped shape your future ambitions?
The activities and clubs offered at Belmont allowed me to explore various interests beyond the academic curriculum, such as sports, choir singing, playing the violin and Chess. I remember coaching younger students in Chess Club with Mr. McCall. I also found Mrs. Ellen to be a very enthusiastic and encouraging Teacher who always set high standards and always wanted me to do my best when participating in numerous music concerts playing the violin singing tunefully in the choir. These experiences proved to be very instrumental in developing my resilience and integrity. The dedication of all of my teachers, in particular Mrs. Wishart, Mrs. Cloney, Mrs. Killin, Mr. McClemont, Mr. Parr, Mr. Orr, Mrs. Scott, Mr. Shanks, Mr. Teiger and Dad (Mr. Doak), inspired me to aspire to similar roles where I could have a positive impact on students’ lives.
What advice would you give to current Belmont students who want to follow a similar path to yours?
My advice would be to remain curious and open to learning. Engage with your teachers and peers, explore extracurricular activities, and don’t be afraid to ask questions. Building relationships and networking during your time at school can lead to invaluable opportunities in the future. Most importantly, pursue what you enjoy doing – your passions will guide you towards a fulfilling career. I always remember a certain Mr. Doak’s poster outside his Lab that read, “Not all Chemists wear white coats!” This has resonated with me to this day. I have learnt that whatever path you choose, there will be many interlinkable skills that you will learn that can be applied to many different areas/ roles.
Looking back, how do you feel Belmont House School prepared you for the challenges and opportunities you’ve faced in life?
I feel that Belmont prepared me exceptionally well for both challenges and opportunities through its holistic approach to education. The diverse range of subjects and experiences helped me to become adaptable and resilient. The support from teachers and peers instilled a strong sense of self-belief, equipping me to face obstacles with confidence and embrace opportunities for growth throughout my life.
