Higher Geography pupils visited Dams to Darnley and the wider Newton Mearns area on a field trip investigating the impact of urban sprawl on the area. We looked at indicators of pollution and human impact such as water quality and air quality as well as measuring biodiversity. We made links to flood risk, soil type and also the consequences of urban sprawl on people, such as house prices and changes in retail. Joe, the Ranger at Dams to Darnley took us around the park and explained about the really interesting heritage of the site in terms of its days as bleaching fields and the mines that are now collapsing.
