Modern Languages

French is introduced at Nursery level and taught throughout the Junior School, with German subsequently introduced at S1 and S2 levels. Spanish is introduced as a taster course in Senior 1 and then from Intermediate 2 level upwards.

The Department offers:

3 – 14 courses in French
Standard Grade courses in French & German
Higher Still courses at Intermediate 2, Higher and Advanced Higher in all 3 languages.

Pupils are encouraged to exchange e-mails with pen friends and to participate in exchanges with a French school.

Pupils are entered for competitions such as the Rotary Club International Public Speaking Competition, The University of St Andrews German Speaking Competition, the SALT ‘Poster’ competition and those run by the Goethe Institut or Alliance Française.

S5 / S6 pupils attend the annual international debate run by the School of Translation and Interpreting at Herriot Watt University. Trips to see films and theatrical productions in the foreign language are also organised.
