Governors
Belmont House Limited is incorporated under the Companies Acts. It is limited by guarantee and has charitable status. The Governors of the school are in the first instance directors of the limited company and the composition of the Board of Directors (and accordingly of Governors) is determined by the Articles of Association of the company.
Belmont House Ltd is a not-for-profit limited company that controls the assets of the School, and is responsible for the proper operation of the School as a company. All parents are members of this company and are entitled to raise business and vote at the AGM of the company.
The Board of Governors undertakes a number of duties for the School. They must ensure resources are used to the best advantage of the whole School community. This community comprises the staff, parents and, most importantly, the pupils of the School. The role of the Board is strategic, and all aspects of the day-to-day running of the school are in the hands of the Principal and Senior Management Team. Governors meet regularly, approximately every two months, and at their meetings receive reports on budgetary matters and all other aspects of School life. The Principal and General Manager attend Board meetings ex officio. There is no set length of service for governors but it would be most unusual for a period in office to be less than 3 or more than 9 years.
The Board has a number of sub-committees that are concerned with Finance, Marketing and Development, Buildings and Fabric and Educational policy. The sub-committees are responsible for recommending future policies and action for approval by the whole Board. All Governors have as their overriding concern, the well being of the School and its pupils - some are parents of current pupils, some are former pupils and others have no previous association with Belmont House. All are committed to the aims of the School and seek to promote its standing as one of the leading Independent schools in Scotland.
AN INVITATION
We are fortunate to have a group of hard-working and committed Governors on our Board at present, but we realise they will move on through time on the basis that each member will serve a minimum of three years. To this end, we would be delighted to hear from individuals who wish to put their names forward for consideration for Board membership. We are looking for people who are committed to the future of Belmont and who have specific skills that relate to the general business of the School and the various committees. Above all, we need people who can commit time and energy as we move forward to an exciting chapter in the history of Belmont. If you feel you are up for the challenge, send a resume to the Chairman, outlining your background, your experience and skills, and a short statement as to how you could effectively contribute to the Board of Governors.
