Biolab

On Friday 27th November, the S4 Higher Biology class visited the Biolab at the Jordanhill campus of the University of Strathclyde.  The pupils had an opportunity to spend a day in a research science lab and also gained hands on experience using the technique of PCR (Polymerase Chain Reaction). This technique is one of the many essential tools used today in Forensic Biology as it enables small samples of DNA, perhaps obtained from a crime scene or for a paternity test, to be amplified and used in conjunction with DNA Electrophoresis to make positive identifications. All of the pupils thoroughly enjoyed their experience in the Biolab as it supplemented and enhanced the theory of DNA replication contained within the Higher course, and put into practice the technique of PCR.
