Nursery and Junior School pupils spent Thursday 7th February learning about Chinese New Year traditions and celebrating the new Year of the Rat. Nursery pupils sampled delicious home-made dumplings, crackers and Chinese sweets, courtesy of Mrs Mary Jin, whose daughter, Jennifer, will shortly be joining the nursery class and who also joined in the celebrations wearing a beautiful traditional Chinese dress. Mrs Jin also explained about the 12 animals that make up the cycle of the Chinese lunar calendar as well as Chinese alphabet characters and symbols.
Junior 3 pupils made lanterns and dressed up as a Chinese dragon, visiting each of the Junior School classes in turn, handing out sweets as part of the celebrations.
Jane Finlay, Senior Nursery Officer, said: "All the children really enjoyed learning about the various customs and celebrations associated with Chinese New Year and sampling the wonderful food. It was a very colourful occasion with lots of opportunities for the children to make lanterns and learn how to write some of the characters".
