Support for Learning

The Support for Learning Department is a whole school resource to staff, pupils and parents, offering assistance where a barrier to learning occurs. It operates through a process of collaboration across the school, fostering a continuous and progressive approach to learning for pupils throughout their primary and secondary education.

Pupils with additional support needs or disabilities have additional arrangements or adjustments made in external exams so that their ability and true performance can be measured. This usually comes in the form of extra time in exams. To support these arrangements a psychological or medical report may be necessary along with evidence of the pupil's work demonstrating their difficulty at school.

Our aim is to share an understanding of the continuum of special educational needs in Belmont House School so that there is a whole school approach.

A secondary aim is to facilitate the earliest identification of additional support needs and to work with all staff colleagues to plan and make provision for an appropriate curriculum. Whilst some children may have temporary difficulties e.g. through absence, others may have a need for long term support because they have special educational needs. Some children may require a multi-agency approach in this identification and this will be encouraged when necessary.

Our third aim is to support all children in their learning so that they achieve their potential. Support for Learning provides challenging activities and extension work for the able.
