Biology

Biology is the study of living organisms and as such, it's one of the broadest subjects in science.

Objectives

  • To offer the pupils a wide, conceptual experience of current thinking and practice in biology.
  • To encourage a positive and disciplined attitude through practical experimentation and recording evidence.
  • To study biological content relevant to perceived needs of society now and in the future.
  • To build a framework within which pupils' understanding of some important biological ideas or concepts can be developed.

Methods and Content

Within the objectives outlined, a pupil should acquire:

  • Knowledge and understanding of some biological facts, ideas and techniques; applications of biology in society.
  • Skills in problem solving by handling and processing information; evaluating procedures and information; drawing conclusions and making predictions.
  • Practical abilities associated with investigations in biology.
  • Positive attitudes, such as being open-minded and willing to recognise alternative points of view; having an interest in biology, in themselves and their environment; an awareness that they can take decisions which affect the well-being of themselves and others, and the quality of their environment.

Presentation Level

Biology is presented in Senior 1 and at Standard Grade, Higher and Advanced Higher Levels.  The aim of Senior 1 is to prepare the students for making informed decisions regarding their science subject choice in Senior 2.
