Science

Transitus Science is taught as a comprehensive subject, inclusive of Physics, Chemistry, and Biology.  The curriculum follows:  Earth and Space, Energy and Forces, and Living Things and the Process of Life.  Students are assessed in three areas: Knowledge and Understanding, Practical Abilities, and Developing Informed Attitudes.  Pupils are assessed by means of practical lab activities (TAPS) at least twice during the year.

Belmont House School prides itself on small class sizes, which enables a "hands-on" approach to learning.  Students are given a broad exposure to a variety of equipment including electrical components, a plethora of chemistry glassware and measuring apparatus.  Other practical activities include safe use and operation of a Bunsen burner, investigating air resistance and streamlining, assessing pH values of solutions, and collecting leaves as a comparative study of plants.

The aim for Transitus Science is to prepare pupils for entrance to discrete Science classes in Senior 1 while cultivating a natural curiosity, enjoyment, and appreciation for the material.  Students will have much of the syllabus presented in the form of digital media, when appropriate, to facilitate successful learning in line with A Curriculum for Excellence.
